Two years ago, Shannon photographed Claire and Lyle’s wedding. And just 10 days ago, she was back at Desert Botanical Garden for another golden hour session but this time for Claire’s daughter Andrea and her fiancé Nathan.
Claire and Lyle were there too – in the background, phones out, grinning, enjoying every moment watching this engagement session go down.
That’s the thing we love about our work. When it goes the way it’s supposed to, it doesn’t end when we deliver the gallery. People come back. They bring their people.
About Andrea and Nathan
These two found each other through Andrea’s esthetician – which is honestly a great origin story. They dated for a year before Nathan proposed, and the second you meet them you understand why it worked. They’re quiet and maybe a little understated, but get them laughing and the whole vibe changes. That playfulness is all over this gallery.
They came into the session a little concerned about the heat as it was mid-June in Phoenix, which if you’ve spent time here from May thru September you know exactly about that concern! This golden hour session at Desert Botanical Garden is worth it though. The light that comes through the saguaros at that time of day is unlike anything else. We knew if we got the timing right, the images would be breathtaking.
What Desert Botanical Garden Actually Provides
If you’re an Arizona couple considering DBG for your engagement session, here’s what to know. The garden has multiple distinct environments within walking distance of each other: the saguaro garden, the prickly pear fields, the wildflower areas near Papago Park, the bridge with the woven canopy overhead. You can move through several completely different looks in one session without ever getting in a car.
The red buttes of Papago Park show up in the background of several frames making it obvious you’re in Phoenix. You couldn’t mistake these photos for anywhere else. That matters – especially if you’re planning an Arizona wedding and want your engagement images to give that desert vibe.
The Moment We Keep Coming Back To
There’s an image of Andrea and Nathan laughing in the middle of the cacti garden – her head thrown back, him watching her (Claire and Lyle completely out of frame but very much present). It meant so much to Shannon to be the one holding the camera.
That’s what engagement sessions are actually for. Not just the photos. The relationship. The trust that gets built before the wedding day so that when it actually matters, everyone already knows each other.
Andrea and Nathan’s wedding day will be here quicker than we know and Shannon will be there too.
